Q: What is the Great Hurricane Blowout?

A: The Great Hurricane Blowout is a first of its kind hurricane preparedness campaign designed to help families get ready for hurricane season in advance allowing them to “breathe easy” if a storm does indeed head their way.

Q: Who created the Great Hurricane Blowout?

A: The Great Hurricane Blowout is presented by the Federal Alliance for Safe Home, Inc. – FLASH. Based in Tallahassee, FL FLASH is the country’s leading nonprofit, consumer advocate for strengthening homes and safeguarding families from natural and manmade disasters. FLASH collaborates with more than 100 innovative and diverse partners that share its vision of making America a more disaster-resistant nation.

Q: What are the steps to “breathing easy”?

A: A family can “breathe easy” if they have successfully completed all of the steps to hurricane preparedness. The five steps to breathing easy are:

  • Ready, Set, Plan!: Preparing a family hurricane emergency plan.

  • Build a Kit, Bling a Kit: Creating a personalized family hurricane emergency kit

  • No Power, No Problem: Planning to stay safe during a power outage

  • Protect Your Home in a FLASH: Strengthening the home to withstand hurricane conditions

  • Get AFFILIATED: Becoming affiliated with a volunteer organization and receiving hurricane response training.

Q: Why should I get ready for hurricane season before anything really happens?

A: When a storm is looming, imagine how relieved you will feel knowing your family has a plan, a kit and a home prepared to face whatever Mother Nature blows your way. Advanced preparation means no last minute trips to crowded stores, being sure that your family knows exactly what to do if a hurricane watch or warning goes up, and the confidence that you can take care of your family’s needs for at least 72 hours after a hurricane passes. In short, you can “breathe easy.”

Q: How can families and individuals join the Blowout?

A: Go through the preparedness steps to make sure your family is prepared for hurricane season. Also, be sure to “like” us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for access to an ongoing hurricane preparedness conversation, access to weekly contests with fantastic prizes and the chance to win a Kohler whole home generator with installation from the Home Depot.

Q: What are the Blowout Events?

A: The Great Hurricane Blowout has a number of events that engage the whole family in fun activities while continuing to reinforce hurricane preparedness messages. These events will launch throughout the season including:

  • National Kit Party Day: Many families at risk for hurricanes are unable to adequately prepare for them. The National Kit Party is an initiative that encourages volunteer organizations, families, companies and others to prepare extra hurricane kits to donate to neighbors in need in their local community. National Kit Party Day will be celebrated on June 18th when we will encourage people across the hurricane region to host a kit building party in their community.

  • Dine In the Dark: Families will have the opportunity to test drive the types of food in their hurricane emergency kit. Once a family has given their “power-free” meal a test drive they can submit it during the month of August in the Dine in the Dark Sweepstakes for a chance to win a trip for two to The American Club in Kohler, WI.

  • Lightning Protection System Sweepstakes: In the month of July, enter to win a home lighting protection system from the Lightning Protection Institute while learning how to keep your home and your family safe from dangerous lightning.

  • Kohler Home Generator Sweepstakes: On June 1st, families can enter to win a whole home, standby generator from Kohler with installation from The Home Depot. “Like us” on Facebook to enter.

  • Facebook and Twitter Giveaways: Fans of the Blowout on Facebook and followers on Twitter are all eligible for bi-weekly gift card giveaways from The Home Depot and host of other surprises.

Q: How can I participate in Blowout Events?

A: The Great Hurricane Blowout has a number of events throughout hurricane season. These events all help keep families on the path of preparedness. In July you can learn about and win a lightning protection system, during peak hurricane season you can Dine in the Dark! New activities will launch throughout the season so visit Blowout Events often. Also “like” us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for frequent updates!

Q: What is the difference between Blowout Activities and Blowout Events?

A: The Blowout activities are all of the steps a family would need to get ready for hurricane season from preparing an emergency kit to learning how to make sure your home can stand up to a hurricane. The Blowout events are additional opportunities for families to learn about hurricane preparedness, have fun and win great prizes to make sure they are ready for the season.

Q: Can I participate if I’m not on Facebook?

A: There are a number of ways families can participate in the Blowout, even if they aren’t on Facebook. All of the Blowout resources including family planning tools, games and tips can be accessed through the Blowout website. Visit the Blowout Events to see all of the activities that will launch throughout the season and how you can get involved as each component launches.
