A: The Great Hurricane Blowout is a first of its kind hurricane preparedness campaign designed to help families get ready for hurricane season in advance allowing them to “breathe easy” if a storm does indeed head their way. Q: Who created the Great Hurricane Blowout? A: The Great Hurricane Blowout is presented by the Federal Alliance for Safe Home, Inc. – FLASH. Based in Tallahassee, FL FLASH is the country’s leading nonprofit, consumer advocate for strengthening homes and safeguarding families from natural and manmade disasters. FLASH collaborates with more than 100 innovative and diverse partners that share its vision of making America a more disaster-resistant nation. Q: What are the steps to “breathing easy”? A: A family can “breathe easy” if they have successfully completed all of the steps to hurricane preparedness. The five steps to breathing easy are:
Q: Why should I get ready for hurricane season before anything really happens? A: When a storm is looming, imagine how relieved you will feel knowing your family has a plan, a kit and a home prepared to face whatever Mother Nature blows your way. Advanced preparation means no last minute trips to crowded stores, being sure that your family knows exactly what to do if a hurricane watch or warning goes up, and the confidence that you can take care of your family’s needs for at least 72 hours after a hurricane passes. In short, you can “breathe easy.” Q: How can families and individuals join the Blowout? A: Go through the preparedness steps to make sure your family is prepared for hurricane season. Q: How can I participate in Blowout Events? A: The Great Hurricane Blowout has a number of events throughout hurricane season. These events all help keep families on the path of preparedness. In July you can learn about and win a lightning protection system, during peak hurricane season you can Dine in the Dark! New activities will launch throughout the season so visit Blowout Events often. Also “like” us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for frequent updates! Q: What is the difference between Blowout Activities and Blowout Events? A: The Blowout activities are all of the steps a family would need to get ready for hurricane season from preparing an emergency kit to learning how to make sure your home can stand up to a hurricane. The Blowout events are additional opportunities for families to learn about hurricane preparedness, have fun and win great prizes to make sure they are ready for the season. Q: Can I participate if I’m not on Facebook? A: There are a number of ways families can participate in the Blowout, even if they aren’t on Facebook. All of the Blowout resources including family planning tools, games and tips can be accessed through the Blowout website.
