![]() Now that you and your family are prepared to ride out a hurricane, it is time to think about how you can help your community. Recovery efforts from all natural disasters, including hurricanes, depend on the support of everyday people stepping in to help rebuild a community. From Hurricane Katrina to the Haitian earthquake to floods in Tennessee, trained and ready volunteers in post-disaster situations have the satisfaction of knowing that they are giving to their community when it needs it the most - and - gaining a positive experience that they can draw on for years to come. The first step is to find an organization in your community and get affiliated before a disaster strikes. Local non-profits, religious organizations, schools and civic groups are all great places to start looking. If you are unsure on where to go, click here for opportunities in your town. Next, be sure to complete any training and orientation courses your chosen organization offers. If you are called on in a disaster, you will want to be able to hit the ground running. Being up to date on the procedures and processes of your organization will allow you step right in. Finally, don't wait for a disaster to pitch in. These organizations do great work all year round and they can use your support. You may also want to consider taking a CPR or first aid course.
